With the resolve to forgo the trappings of the overly themed properties on The Strip in favor of urban planning, real architecture and public art, CityCenter officially broke ground in April of 2006 and with this note in the first project-wide email, “Opening Day - December 1, 2009”
“Starchitects” signed on – Stern, Libeskind, Viñoly, Pelli and Foster, plus KPF and EEK. Gensler was tapped as Executive Architect, overseeing what would eventually cost over $9 billion to build plus a $10 million, temporary sales office to introduce three of the four residential offerings.
Reciting the stats for the behemoth project, it is almost impossible to conceive what was accomplished in such a short time, and in the midst of the worst financial real estate crisis the US, if not the world’s markets, had ever seen.
67-acre site / 66-months construction schedule / 6,800 guest rooms, 1,260 condo units, 6,900 parking spaces / 18,000,000 total square feet, 500,000 sf retail mall, 64 F&B venues / 5 unique real estate brands / $40 million in public art program / $10 million Sales Center / $28 million fire station
